India aims to expand its economic and diplomatic influence in the region by announcing ambitious plans to develop a new trade route from India to Europe via the Middle East.
According to Voice of America, this plan, which is called “India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor”, is supported by the United States and is considered as an alternative to the “Belt and Road” plan of China.
Trade between India and the Arab world has seen steady growth and currently exceeds $240 billion per year. India supplies about 60% of its total crude oil imports from the Middle East.
John Kalabers, a senior fellow at the Washington-based Middle East Institute, says the plan has strategic and economic value for India and moves India’s strategic competition with China into “new territory.”
